The UNESCO Global Geopark of Central Catalonia is a backbone project located in the geographical heart of Catalonia. This geological space, which includes the municipalities of the Bages region, Collbató and other towns of Moianès, is one of the most important destinations for geological tourism. The Geopark not only offers us a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of the landscape, but also to connect with the nature and history of this region.

More than 36 million years ago, the sea covered this area, but with the elevation of the Pyrenees and the Catalanids mountain ranges, this sea disappeared, leaving behind spectacular rock formations and mineral wealth that are now a living testimony to geological history. This process allowed the creation of natural resources that are still fundamental to local society today, such as the well-known Salines de Cardona.

Geotourism activity: a journey through the origins of the earth

The Geopark's tourist routes allow visitors to explore the numerous points of geological and mining interest, such as the Coves del Toll and the Coves del Salnitre, which are the most fascinating witnesses to this geological heritage. In addition, the Valentí Masachs Geology Museum in Manresa allows you to learn in depth about the geological history of the region through interactive exhibitions and educational resources.

Throughout the year, the Geopark offers cycling and walking routes, allowing visitors to actively enjoy nature and the rock formations. These routes are perfect for both nature lovers and those who want to learn more about the geology of the territory. In October, the Geopark Gastronomic Fair is also held, where you can taste local products and learn about the culinary traditions of the region.

The sustainable approach of the Geopark

The UNESCO Global Geopark aims to promote sustainable tourism through geotourism, promoting local culture and the protection of geological heritage. This project not only helps to preserve the unique rock formations, but also creates opportunities for sustainable economic development in the region. Visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beauty of the landscape, but also contribute to the maintenance of the environment and the local economy.
